Occupation introduction

Quantity surveyors manage finances for construction projects. They calculate budgets based on clients’ requirements and prepare detailed estimates to ensure budgets are sufficient for each stage of construction. As a quantity surveyor, you are expected to estimate and monitor construction costs from the project feasibility stage, through tender preparation, to the construction period and beyond.

Level 1 – Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations

LTSSL requirements

The Long Term Skill Shortage List requires one of the following:

A bachelor’s degree at NZQF Level 7, or a higher qualification with the minimum equivalent of 360 credits, which includes the requirements of a New Zealand major in quantity surveying or construction economics

Student or Affiliate Membership, or MNZIQS, of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (with an overseas degree approved by NZIQS)

And a minimum of three years relevant post-qualification work experience.

Education providers

A New Zealand Diploma in Quantity Surveying or a Bachelor of Construction (Construction Economics or Quantity Surveying) is offered at many institutes in New Zealand.
